All About The Footwork
.Juke. Roots in the Jitterbug?
Jitterbug
Many of you may, or may not know, the Juke is alive and well in the streets of Chicago. (as well as the music) You may have seen the fast stepping choreo done by these freestylers on the streets, but only as a rarity. The Chicago juke scene is not very mainstream, it thrives in the blood of the deep urban culture and is a big part of the underground dance scene. Recently after studying this form of dance, I have come across various styles within the urban culture. My personal favorite being the Wu-Tang, which I recommend looking up.
As the title states, juke vs. jitterbug? What is this? Well after extensive ven-diagraming the results show that the juke has its roots in the 1930's. As you can see in footage I hand captured in 1939, the steps incorporated in both the dance styles link up ever so nicely. The juke may have a more fast pace intensity, but you can see that with a phat up-tempo beat, the jitterbug can swiftly transform into what we know today as juke. But which one will officially stand the test of time? ...............juke vs. jitterbug.

Head Room
(Valerie Sullivan)
I breathe you in,
Into the deepest depths of my lungs
Clasping my lips together
So that you never escape
There is nothing i fear more,
than my next gasp of air,
for it is then that i set you free
to diffuse into particles and blend with the rest
my cherished little breath.

Promise fills the emptiness of leaving
Possibilities swell within me that charter me into the unknown
Like caves dimly lit,
Entering with a silent guide solely providing a sense of direction
At arrival, stone cold rocks dig under your feet
Your weight shifts
Stepping on this new terrain, a wrong step can send you falling
With a hint of force, upright you will be
For how long? No one knows
For the first step is only the beginning.
